“Walk Your Way to Wellness: The Essential Benefits of This Simple Exercise”

Walking is a fantastic way to enhance your health. Just half an hour each day can improve your heart health, strengthen your bones, decrease body fat, and build muscle strength. It also helps lower the risk of conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer. Best of all, walking is free and doesn’t need any special gear or training. As a low-impact activity, it can be done anytime and at your own speed, making it suitable for those who are overweight, older, or new to exercise.

Walking also boosts your mood and energy levels. I remember when I first started; it felt incredibly refreshing. Before I began walking, I was exercising 4-5 times a week but still often felt fatigued. So, I decided to walk for 30 minutes each morning before work. Almost immediately, I felt more alert, and after just a few days, my energy improved significantly! I used to experience upper chest discomfort when lying on my left side, likely due to heartburn, but after a few months of walking, that pain disappeared. I realized I was lacking in cardiorespiratory fitness. It’s easy to forget that our heart is a muscle that needs strengthening, and this is crucial.

There are many benefits to walking, such as; weight loss, better circulation, better sleep, strengthens muscles, lowers blood pressure and many other benefits. Walking even helps you think clearer too. Stanford researchers discovered that walking enhances creative inspiration. They studied creativity levels in individuals while they walked compared to when they sat. On average, people’s creative output increased by 60 percent during walking. I’ve read and heard many people say that they get good ideas by walking, some even have meetings while walking, it’s amazing. I’ve had this happen to me while walking and mountain biking, where these great ideas would pop in my head about something I was researching or trying to do, it’s amazing! I read a study of how walking improves your mood. It increases the blood flow, helping oxygen and nutrients move around your body, making you feel more alert and refreshed. It can also release natural chemicals that make you feel happy and positive, like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins. A review of 17 studies by researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that walking in nature improved people’s moods, helping them to feel positive and less stressed and anxious. Who wouldn’t be amazed and happy when surrounded by God’s beautiful creation? Even the smell of the leaves boosts my mood.

If you can manage 30 minutes a day, great! If not, start with 10 minutes; and if that’s too challenging, aim for 5 minutes. Any effort is better than none. Over time, you’ll be able to extend your duration. The more you keep at it, the better you’ll feel, and you’ll likely want to do even more! I remember seeing this older gentleman walking not too far from me, I would see him while I was driving to or from work, he was walking on the sidewalk with a cane bent over going very slow just up and down a short sidewalk, and every week I would see an improvement in his posture and speed. After about a month he no longer had the cane, and he was a lot straighter as he walked and was moving faster. As the months went on he was walking at a decent speed at a far distant, it was amazing to see. It just shows anyone can improve their health if they really wanted to. And walking is a great start!
